Plantation is a city in the
Central Broward County in Florida and gets its name from the previous owner of
the land, the Everglades Plantation Company. The city was incorporated in April
1953 and since then has grown to be a very vibrant city as well as the sixth
largest city in the Broward County. Plantation is often used as a filming
location for popular movies. The city is bordered by well-known cities such as
Fort Lauderdale to the east, Sunrise to the north and west, Davie to the south
and Lauderhill to the northeast. In 2013 the population of the city was
recorded as 90,268 by city-data.com. Plantation is home to world-class
recreational facilities and hosts many annual events yearly to keep visitors
and residents busy and entertained. According to city-data.com the median condo
or house value in 2012 was $247,700 while the median gross rent was $1,332.
The natural environment in
Plantation is incomparable to other cities in South Florida with thousands of trees.
The streets are landscaped beautifully and the city is also rich in amenities
with a competitive business environment maintained by three different business
districts. The general atmosphere of Plantation reflects one which is urban
mixed with a hometown lifestyle. Because of the abundance of trees in the city
it wears many hats which include Tree City USA, Sterling Tree City USA and
Community Wildlife Habitat. The city has very safe and friendly neighborhoods.
In 2008 the city was named by
America's Promise Alliance as one of the nation's 100 Best Communities for
Young People. Plantation has also seen many notable persons including many NFL
players such as Mike McKenzie, Chad Johnson, Ronnie Brown, Luis Castillo,
Patrick Surtain, Zach Thomas, Darrelle Revis and Jake Long.
Plantation is home to the DHL’s
World Headquarters for the Americas. There are many other notable companies and
schools which are located in Plantation including: American InterContinental
University, University of Phoenix, Esperanto Language Institute Headquarters,
Avianca, American Express, Motorola and Goodwin Biotechnology.
The city is served by the Broward
County Public Schools with schools such as Plantation High School, South
Plantation High School, Bar Middle School, Seminole Middle School, Plantation
Middle School, Mirror Lake Elementary School, Peters Elementary School,
Tropical Elementary School, Central Park Elementary School, Plantation
Elementary School, Sawgrass Elementary School, American Heritage School,
American Academy and The Blake School among others.
The city is also well suited with
many restaurants to choose from that match a wide range of palates and budgets.
Some of the restaurants include Koume Japanese Restaurant, Padrino’s
Restaurant, J Alexanders Restaurant, Five Guys, Mustard Seed Bistro, Plantation
Diner, Olive Garden, Lime Fresh Mexican Grill, Brio Tuscan Grille and Green
Wave Café.
Plantation City is also home to
an abundant amount of shopping options with many malls and small shopping areas
all across the city. Some of the shopping areas include Westfield Broward Mall,
The Fountains Shoppes of Distinction, East Sawgrass Shopping District, Westgate
Plaza, Jacaranda Plaza, Viscaya Shops, Plantation Market Place and West Broward
Mall.
